In 2012, we established the Rory J. Weichbrod Scholarship Program. The purpose of the scholarship program is to provide proactive youth outreach and education to inform about the dangers of drunk and impaired driving. Over the years, we have reached thousands of youth scholars and received an outstanding collection of essay submissions. Our goal is to help support and educate young scholars as they begin to learn about the dangers of alcohol.
April is alcohol awareness month and April 21st is designated as National Start Talking to Your Kids About Alcohol Day. Given the strong connection between that day and the goals of Rory’s Unfinished Business, we chose it as the annual due date for the submission of applications for the Rory J. Weichbrod Essay Competition Scholarship. Submissions for the upcoming annual award can be submitted starting in February 2023. In 2014, we expanded the RJW Scholarship Program in partnership with the Maplewood Athletic Association. Rory had the privilege of playing football at Maplewood for 3 years (from 1995-97) before he moved on to play at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School. The goal of this partnership is to reach another youth group community to raise awareness to the dangers of drunk and impaired driving as well as underage drinking. The Rory J. Weichbrod Leadership Awardee is selected from nominations made by the Maplewood coaching staff and is presented annually to a player that best embodies Rory’s qualities. He is a player that carries his Maplewood Pride in an exemplary manner both on and off the field.
Maplewood is a youth football organization in Bethesda, Maryland. It has a long standing tradition of promoting leadership and integrity, both of which were qualities in Rory that were fostered during his time with Maplewood prior to high school.
